U.S. Markets Eye Jobs Data Amid Lingering Fed Concerns

Market Update:

U.S. equity futures were relatively stable Monday morning as investors focused on key jobs data during another shortened trading week.

  • Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were flat.

  • S&P 500 futures rose by 0.16%.

  • Nasdaq 100 futures climbed by 0.24%.

Last week, despite a strong finish on Friday, the major indices recorded overall losses:

  • The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 339.86 points (0.8%) on Friday, closing at 42,732.13.

  • The S&P 500 rose by 1.26%, ending at 5,942.47.

  • The Nasdaq Composite advanced 1.77%, closing at 19,621.68.

These gains capped a shaky week as the anticipated "Santa Claus rally" failed to materialise.

Key Focus for the Week:

Investors enter this week with a cautious outlook as they monitor Federal Reserve interest rate projections and economic data. The New York Stock Exchange will be closed on Thursday in observance of the passing of former President Jimmy Carter.

The December jobs report, due on Friday, is expected to provide crucial insights into the health of the economy. Other key data points include:

  • JOLTS (Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey) on Tuesday.

  • ADP Employment Survey on Wednesday.

Traders will use these reports to assess the strength of the labour market and anticipate potential Federal Reserve actions at the end of the month.

Market Sentiment:

Economic indicators show rising unemployment and cracks in hiring trends, raising questions about the resilience of the labour market. Meanwhile, bond yields remain a critical metric, with the 10-year Treasury yield hovering near a high of 4.6%.

Looking ahead, optimism remains strong for 2025. CEOs are projecting robust profit growth, and individual investors continue to show confidence. However, high expectations could lead to market volatility as key data is released.

Corporate Earnings:

Key earnings reports this week include:

  • Constellation Brands

  • Walgreens Boots Alliance

  • Delta Air Lines

These companies’ results may provide additional insights into consumer sentiment and economic resilience.
